Biomedical Approaches to ADD, ADHD and Autism

I just put together a list of some of the resources that I have heard excellent reports about concerning biomedical interventions that are helpful for attention/focus/and autism for a family. I'll share it here.

Please don’t let the word autism prevent you from some of these resources. There’s a lot of good information about many neurodevelopmental delays of all kinds here, just autism is the big word of the decade. You might  learn about specific behaviors that you see in your child here so give it a try.

The Kid Friendly ADHD and Autism Cookbook (Gluten free Casein free cooking ) http://www.amazon.com/Kid-Friendly-Autism-Cookbook-Updated-Revised/dp/159233394X/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b   I’ve not read this one, but there are many like this on the market to help you

Great Plains laboratory in Kansas City is a place to do various testing for food sensitivities, etc.  They list what kinds of tests to check for the biomedical underpinnings for various conditions including ADD, OCD, Aspergers, etc. Here’s their link.  http://www.greatplainslaboratory.com/home/eng/home.asp

Dr. William Shaw from Kansas City has a book you can check out at the library. When I read this one, I thought so much of my son Brad as much of what he described was what I had experienced during Brad’s toddler years, ear infections followed by antibiotics, reactions to antibiotics, then vaccines, then diarrhea, etc. It’s called,  Biomedical Treatments for Autism and PDD   Or here’s a link to it on line. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0966123816/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=   I would consider Brad totally recovered at this point. He is 25 and has just graduated with a masters degree!

This is new book by Dr. Shaw that I just found – published in 2009. Chapter 8 looks very interesting ADHD to Autism answering questions like, how to identify unsuspected allergies in different age groups. Here’s that book link.  http://www.amazon.com/Autism-Beyond-William-Shaw-Ph-D/dp/0966123867/ref=pd_sim_b_3   It might be less technical than the first one, I'm not sure..

Dr. Woeller just came out with a new book about supplements for Autism and other neurological delays – ADD issues are often thought of as very mild Autism – they are related in many ways. http://autismsupplementscenter.com/guide-book/

TACA is a well know resource for a lot of suggestions. They have an entire link for the CFGF diet.   http://www.talkaboutcuringautism.org/about_taca/taca.htm

University of Davis MIND Institute Dr. Jill James Distinguished Lecturer series,  June 2010 http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/mindinstitute/videos/video_dls.html  This will give you a great but very very technical overview of what they believe biomedical interventions are helping.

You can find much more about these biomedical processes here. http://www.autism.com/pro_categories.asp?con=Baltimore&Year=2010  You can spend months watching all these lectures but it might be worth it.

IM seems to help heal the pathways that have been damaged but environmental insults, but maybe these biomedical interventions could maybe prevent more insults from happening and allow healing to happen as well.  Note:  I am not a doctor! I can not tell you this would or would not be helpful, but am sharing resources I've looked at myself.  For your own searches, note when the resource was published, this field is changing so quickly, you want something published RECENTLY. I won't read books more than 3 years old usually.
